Most people choose a frame size by looking at the photo. That gets it backwards. The photo can be printed at almost any size. The wall can't change. So start with the wall.
Step 1: Measure the space
Measure the width of the wall, or of the furniture the frame will hang above. As a rule of thumb, a single frame above a sofa, sideboard or bed looks right at around half to two thirds of that furniture's width. A frame on its own on a bare wall can be bigger than you think.
Step 2: Tape it out
Cut a piece of paper or tape a rectangle on the wall at the size of the frame you are considering. Leave it for a day. If you keep thinking it looks small, go up a size. Almost nobody regrets going bigger.
Step 3: Check your photo is big enough
The bigger the print, the more pixels it needs. Our builder checks this for you when you upload, and only shows the sizes your photo will print sharply at. More on that in Is my phone photo good enough to frame?
Every Framewick size
The overall size is what hangs on your wall. The print sits inside a mount, which sits inside the frame. All sizes work portrait or landscape.
| Size | Overall, standard mount (5cm / 2in) | Overall, wide mount (10cm / 4in) | Where it works | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | 11x21cm (4.3x8.3in) | 23.3x33.3cm (9.2x13.1in) | 33.3x43.3cm (13.1x17in) | A shelf, a desk, a small gift |
| Keepsake | 15x21cm (5.9x8.3in) | 27.5x33.5cm (10.8x13.2in) | Standard mount only | A bedside, a nursery, a gift |

| Statement | 31x41cm (12.2x16.1in) | 43.3x53.3cm (17x21in) | 53.3x63.3cm (21x24.9in) | Above a sideboard or a bed |
| Gallery | 41x51cm (16.1x20.1in) | 53.3x63.3cm (21x24.9in) | Standard mount only | Above a sofa, a chimney breast |
| Exhibition | 51x71cm (20.1x28in) | 63.3x83.3cm (24.9x32.8in) | Standard mount only | A big wall that needs one strong piece |
What about 6x4, A4 and 8x10?
Those are print sizes, which matter when you already have a printed photo and need a frame to fit it. With Framewick you upload the photo file and we print it to fit the frame you choose, so you don't need to match a print size. A Classic print (11x21cm, 4.3x8.3in) is a little bigger than a 6x4in photo. A Standard print (21x31cm, 8.3x12.2in) is a little bigger than A4.
